For a project for the Biomedical Visualization and Communication certificate, my team developed a concept app, Ova, aimed at educating preteen girls about their bodies in a fun and approachable way. The app uses vertical short videos, mimicking social media to make learning feel less like studying. Lessons are unlocked progressively, ensuring users grasp important foundational knowledge before moving forward. Interactive pop-up questions throughout the videos reinforce learning, and the app’s friendly, casual tone makes it perfect for a young audience. I created a series of fun and colourful illustrations which are featured in the UI and videos, creating an inviting and playful learning experience. It would also be available in multiple languages, ensuring accessibility for mobile users around the world.
The idea stemmed from my experience teaching biology in Egypt, where I saw the need for sex education classes. Sex and menstruation are a taboo topic in the Middle East and aren’t often discussed at school or home due to embarrassment and shame. Kids are left uninformed about their bodies which results in a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation and ultimately impacts the potential of young women in all aspects of their lives. With the increasing use of technology globally, Ova is our solution to address that gap in a sensitive yet engaging way and empower women everywhere.
