Basic Biochem is my YouTube channel dedicated to breaking down high-level biochemistry topics through clear explanations and diagrams to make complex concepts accessible and engaging.
In my final year of undergrad, I was taking upper-level biochemistry courses (naturally). As a visual learner, I found that I was struggling more than my peers to understand certain concepts. Normally I would take to YouTube and watch a few tutorials to better understand but it was difficult to even find channels that covered the high-level biochemistry we were learning in classes (biophysical chemistry was no joke). With new scientific findings and biomedical technology changing so quickly, I realized there was a gap in the market for video content about upper-level biochemistry for budding scientists like me. I spoke to my supervisor at the time who was the chair of the biochemistry department about starting a YouTube channel under McGill University’s name and as enthusiastic as he was, he told me we had no funding for it so I took it upon myself to start this passion-project after graduating. Although I’ve posted only a handful of videos because of my limited time, the “likes” and viewers who took the time to leave me positive feedback about how my explanations and diagrams have helped them finally understand a topic fuelled my passion for science communication and pushed me to pursue it professionally.
